In an effort to create something original without inspiration, I decided to work on a colorful painting featuring poppies. However, my first attempt failed to convey proper foreground perspective, prompting me to scrape virtually half of the painting the following day and start again. To create depth, I strategically included fields to shorten the distance and compensate for the foreground, which proved more effective than the flat and lackluster initial version.
As the standard zigzag composition started to take place, I struggled as to how to guide the viewer’s eye through the painting; it was still missing the punctuation of a key subject. I needed something in the foreground grass but the addition of birds, butterflies, and even a ladybug proved too commonplace. Then, the idea of a dragonfly struck me. You might note that its iridescent eyes are the only hot pink color in the entire piece.
