As an artist, I always seek new inspirations for my work. On a recent trip to my son’s Montana ranch, I found myself captivated by the rolling hills and the nostalgia they evoked in me. I envisioned a western subtle sunset that would enhance the beauty of the hills and perhaps transport the viewer to a time long gone.
Seated in a lawn chair in the shade of a horse stall, I decided to do a small plein air. I wanted to capture the essence of the landscape and spent a few hours lost in painting a simple and muted work. The distant purple mountain is an off-color calming focal point, aside from the left-justified structure in the landscape. The painting exudes a sense of tranquility, and it’s as if time has stood still in this place. The western sunset adds a layer of depth to the painting, casting a warm glow over the hills, and giving it a sense of nostalgia.
As I painted, I felt a deep sense of connection to the land and the people who have lived on it throughout the years. The rolling hills and the Big Sky view have a timeless quality that is hard to capture and I hope my painting brings a sense of peace and tranquility to those who view it.
