I started this painting with a bold mix of pinks, oranges, and blues, imagining a whale bursting up from the depths of the ocean. Getting the splash and the light to feel right was a real challenge. I spent a lot of time working through the details of the whale’s movement, especially the inverted flip, which reminded me of a gymnast suspended mid-air. What I’m most proud of in this painting is how the water pulls back with the same energy as the leap itself. That push and release brought the whole scene to life and helped capture the power and motion of the impressive mammal.
