This painting was a cathartic expression of the loss of my sweet terrier named ‘Measle’. He left us tragically at an early age of only 4 years old, due to an unexplained poisoning. His memory lingers in my heart as a constant reminder of his playful nature – he used to perch on my shoulders and leap into my arms with a simple command and a pat on my chest. As I painted, my tears mingled with the colors on the canvas, hours spent pouring my grief into each palette stroke, creating a poignant scene that captured the essence of my furry four-legged companion.

Measle had an independent spirit, a trait that made his sudden departure all the more difficult to accept. The morning after he passed away, the haunting melody of Don McLean’s “Vincent” played in my mind. Reflecting on Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” I merged the song’s sentiment with the word “Sorry,” giving birth to “Sorry Night.” To counter the vast emptiness of the night sky, I added the Milky Way and a shooting star to brighten up the vast void in the night sky…he was my shooting star. I even contemplated naming the painting ‘Sirius,’ after the Dog Star, in his honor.

Creating Measle’s likeness was a bittersweet challenge. As the central figure, he was the last element I painted, the most crucial and the most heart pulling. Despite ‘Meazy’s actual appearance as a small black-and-brown, wire-haired dog, I faced the task of capturing his essence in as few strokes as possible and choosing a color that would pop him out of the foreground (I had painted him a total of 3 times -first brown, then light blue, and finally a reflection of the moon settling on his deep yellow gold.) The process was a dance of controlled swipes of color attempting to capture his body and head with proportionate precision. His signature bent ear and button nose were the final strokes, signifying the end of this artistic journey. Looking at this painting evokes a mixture of reflection and longing and yet, I love the bright primary colors that hold cheer of a life short lived. I hold his memory with deep affection, his absence still felt to this day.
