Initially struggling with how to begin and no idea in mind, I started with attempting to paint a blazing sky considering a sunset theme to guide my painting process. Starting from the top and working my way down, I drew in the horizon line at a third of the way down the canvas. Without any concrete plan in mind, I painted freely for 13 hours, but my lack of preparation ultimately became apparent. Realizing that the center of the painting was empty, I spent the next nine hours attempting to rectify the issue. Adding a boat failed to resolve the problem as its proportion was incorrect. I then considered introducing a stump to the bank or a protruding dock, but due to the already-painted scale of the boat, neither would rectify the empty center. Ultimately, I added a sandbar that leads the viewer’s eye to the sunset, with the boat positioned along this line. To improve the composition, I also added two more trees to complement the single-standing tree. The setting reminds me of home and Lake Pend Oreille.
