Paying homage to my North Idaho roots, I envisioned a vibrant-colored bear portrait on canvas. Starting with a washed-out blue sky, I intended to create an entire background abstract of standing water, but my mother had other ideas. As she kept me company while I painted and she watched the show “Yellowstone”, she pointed out the “fading depth of the stacked mountains” in the opening scenes. She suggested I add some to my painting. Always wanting to please my artistic mother, I painted in the snow-capped peaks, and the scale and scene of the water source transformed the work into a peaceful lake surrounded by a meadow. However, a bubble on the canvas forced me to include a fat moon, creating a new problem – I had no place to ground the bear.
After scraping a section of foreground to create a leading diagonal composition , I began experimenting with different colors and strokes. The foreground went from several green blocks to variegated light blues before finally settling on a beautiful, snowy white. I spent hours working this section of the painting, laying down layer upon layer of paint until it was just right.
While the bear only took me less than an hour to paint, the rest of the work took hour upon hours to complete. Naming the painting was a challenge in itself, with options like “The Hunt,” “Solo,” “Cold Pursuit” and “Simply Bare” being considered. In the end, we settled on “Cinnamon’s Roll,” a play on words as the cinnamon-colored bear rolls across the snowy landscape.
