Rather than painstakingly stretching my own oversized canvas, I love finding treasures in charity shops – especially large canvases that are already pre-gessoed and in excellent condition. If I’m lucky, I might even stumble upon ones that come nicely framed, providing instant gratification once my painting is complete. Recently, I acquired one such gem featuring a horizontal scene with a fence line and pink flowers among trees. However, once in my studio, I decided to switch things up by reorienting it vertically on my easel, This sparked a surge of creativity as the dim light of the early hours left only shadowy shapes. Like observing clouds shift and imagining shapes in the sky, the canvas seemed to reveal forms of a mother elephant and her very small calf which served as the inspiration for this painting. Opting for a lively palette, I selected citrine green and vibrant pastel hues to bring a playful energy to the canvas.
