I gazed at the blank canvas, torn between a horizontal landscape and a vertical birch tree scene. Drawing palette color seasonal inspiration from Leonid Afremov’s “Winter’s Night,” I made up my mind to paint a tall vertical swapping out his street lamp for a tree, Eventually, I settled on a blue-hued background and began adding depth with contrasting shades of burnt sienna, chocolate brown, and titanium white. At first the stoic tree was enough subject, but even as the foreground came to life, something felt missing. Despite the informative textures, I felt the piece was boring and out of balance…lifeless and without mystery. It needed something to draw the eye up the tree to a pop of color in the serene scene. I envisioned a small bird perched atop the tree, and after some experimentation, I painted and scraped a cardinal (too red). I painted and scraped a chickadee (it looked like a smudgy mistake). Frustrated, I settled on a vibrant tanager. But the tree base and bird seemed to compete. So, I scraped the bird and swapped it out for a subtle yellow orb. I love how the snow lazily drapes in the crook of the tall birch tree capturing the peaceful essence of the artwork. I almost named it “sNOw Bird,” but decided that it wouldn’t make sense if the viewer didn’t know this backstory. And so, the final piece is aptly named “Butterscotch Moon” just like those little candies in my Nana Banana’s candy dish.
