In Pondicherry, India, boats dot the landscape with wonderful color to the picturesque shores of the beaches. I sought to capture the vibrant essence of these vessels lining the serene Bay of Bengal. Positioned against a rugged rock wall beneath the fisherman’s village, these 15 boats symbolize the conclusion of a day’s toil. As I painted, I found myself reveling in the simple delight of selecting each boat’s hues, reminiscent of a child joyfully picking crayons in kindergarten. I aimed to imbue each vessel with a unique personality, turning them into distinctive symbols of affection. The boat at the front of this painting holds a little secret: the numbers of my husband Bruce’s airplane, a small tribute to his life as a pilot. To me, these boats feel like airplanes of the sea, carrying stories, adventures, and connections across the water. This scene reflects my love for the sea and the personal stories it inspires, brought to life through color, movement, and the touches that make it uniquely mine.
