Artist Inspiration: Monet’s Ducks is a study I painted during a special mother-daughter trip to France for my 60th birthday. My daughter Rio booked me a studio in Aix-en-Provence, and every morning, she walked me to class through the narrow cobblestone streets, our own sweet switch of roles. At the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing, I took my first-ever formal art class since earning my Fine Arts minor degree in college. As part of the assignment, I chose Monet’s Duck Pond from 100 master paintings to recreate in my style. Its circular composition and autumn colors reminded me of my childhood in Bucks County and the weathered barns of Idaho. Though I normally prefer the freedom of palette knives over the slow work of brushes, this experience taught me to pause, study the light, and mix color with intention. My version of Monet’s Duck Pond captures the quiet reflections and gentle movements of the ducks echoes of that special time with Rio and the joy of learning together.
