I wanted to capture the feeling of watching 1,200 sheep fill the street in front of the Pioneer Saloon, following a path they have traveled through this valley for generations.
As I painted, I kept coming back to the ewe and her twins. They stand proudly at the front of the flock, meeting our eyes as the sheep move behind them in a sweep of pale blue and white. People gather along the street to watch, but these three hold my attention.
To me, the twins are the heart of the painting—a little snapshot of what makes Ketchum special: the sheep, the Pioneer, the people, and the traditions that bring us together year after year. They are also a tender reminder that these traditions live on through each new generation finding its way along the trail.
