Artist Inspiration: I created this commission for skiing clients who asked for a Thanksgiving-inspired palette around a skier — rich, harvest tones that feel warm and abundant, with a subject that commanded attention for a central fireplace piece. I painted motion: a skier punching through fresh powder, exploding forward with force and freedom.
Deep ambers, rusts, oranges, slate blues, sap greens, and crimson weave through the figure, creating a blast of color in the spray and carrying the spirit of fall into winter’s terrain. I couldn’t resist adding swipes of bright citron and sharp, deliberate highlights — a slightly dangerous color introduction that makes the whole piece pop.
There’s a boldness in that split second where gravity meets grit. A faint treeline and softened slope linger behind, with just a hint of sun breaking through. The canvas feels wild and untamed, as if the skier isn’t simply descending the mountain but bursting straight through the season itself. When I sat with the finished piece, the word ‘powerful ‘kept surfacing, and I couldn’t help but let the title ‘Power Fall’ echo both the strength of the skier and the harvest tones of the palette.
