Artist Inspiration: My painting Dance Man Dance! is about participation—about stepping forward, joining in, and feeling the joy of movement. From a man’s point of view, it’s intentionally literal: a single male figure rises to dance rather than simply observe, set within the unmistakable Sandpoint landscape—bright moon casting its glow over the lake, mountains anchoring the horizon, and open space inviting movement and freedom. Women and children dance in the foreground beneath the vast moon, while the festival recedes into the distance. The ospreys watch from their nest above, holding the night in stillness. A small girl in yellow is a self-portrait, and beside her stands my daughter, Rio; I quietly joined us with shared strokes of purple—echoing her dress at my feet—as a gesture of connection. The witness is left open: the man in orange, the moon, or the act of watching. The painting celebrates the alignment of music, place, and people, showing how joy and unity grow from stepping in rather than standing apart. It’s about presence, participation, and the shared experience of being fully here together.
