Artist Inspiration: I love the beckoning call of a crisp winter walk that this painting evokes and continue to learn from and be inspired by Leonid Afremov’s Winter. Be Still was a joyful challenge. By skipping my palette knife over semi-dry oil, I created a spongy, speckled, dappled surface where the canvas shows through and the undercolor emerges. That interaction produced a distinctive stroke and texture which is one of my favorite elements of the piece. The greatest challenge was shaping the shadows beneath the back trees on the left and establishing the perspective and height of the snow rising from the lake. The deep, dark purple edge adds depth and weight to the water, while the spilling reflection of moonlight brings balance and quiet beauty. When it came time to name the work, Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God” came to mind, as the frozen stillness of the landscape echoes the peace and reverence of that verse.
