On my largest canvas to date, I chose a bold subject: a lion. Painting its full head against a vibrant backdrop brought energy to the piece, and figuring out perspective and reflections kept me completely focused. The lion’s eyes became the heart of the work, showing its intense focus as it lapped water. Deep burgundy-black contrasts with its golden coat and fiery mane, while subtle powder-blue highlights across the nose make the face stand out. I struggled at first to get the spacing of the eyes just right, and in frustration, I joked with my daughter about it—that’s actually how the title came to be. This painting has become one of my favorites, capturing the lion’s strength, spirit, and raw beauty.
