I love the beckoning call of a crisp winter walk that this painting elicits in me and continue to learn and model after Leonid Afermov’s “Winter” painting. ‘Be Still’ was a fun challenge and the effect of skipping my palette knife over semi-dry oil, creating the spongy, speckled, dappled appearance that comes from the canvas bleeding through the paint, pulled out the undercolor. This resulted in a unique stroke and texture which is one of my favorite parts of this work.
The most challenging aspect of this work was painting the shadows beneath the left-hand back trees, spending a considerable time working on that detail. I also struggled with creating the perspective and height of snow rising from the lake. The deep, dark purple border adds depth to the lake, and the spilling reflection of moonlight creates a beautiful effect. When naming this piece, I thought of Psalm 30, “Be still and know that I am God,” as the stillness and frozen landscape reminded me of this verse.
