Riverbreaks Barn

Named after the road on which my youngest son, Selkirk, lives, this painting was created during a weekend visit to his farmette. I found inspiration in a rundown barn on his property, which became the focal point of my first plein air painting. Using a small pre-framed canvas, I painted a colorful sky and a foreground of grass, adding spring green buds on the tree and pink and blue flowers to tie in the sky. I used creative license and added some blue to the barn as well. As I was packing up my paints, If you look closely, you will notice a faint natural impression from my paint of a curved path sweeping behind the barn. Torn between my lack of patience to work the hint to an intentional element and perhaps bring more life to the work, I ultimately decided to leave it as is, appreciating the subtle detail of the path. However,  every time I look at this piece, I see that faint path…perhaps I should consider renaming it ‘The Road Less Traveled.’
