Artist Inspiration: Inspired by a Leonid Afremov sailboat painting, Festive Harbor is one of my favorite pieces. The sky, built from layered squares and rectangles, became my way of suggesting confetti drifting through the night and capturing a sense of celebration.I expanded the scene by adding more boats, broadening the color palette, and working on a tall, narrow canvas that challenged my sense of perspective. A third boat was added using Da Vinci’s Rule of Odds to create a stronger sense of balance and movement. The water emerged through a playful, unscripted process as I dragged a palette knife through layered paint to create shimmering reflections. I reworked the moonlight until it felt just right and used the edge of a cardboard envelope for the mast lines. Abstract horizon shapes help the boats stand out, resulting in a colorful piece that captures a sense of still movement.
