Artist Inspiration: I set aside outside inspiration and began a vibrant painting centered on poppies. My first attempt fell short, the foreground perspective lacked depth so the following day I scraped away nearly half the canvas and began again. To correct the space, I introduced layered fields to compress distance and strengthen perspective, transforming the composition from flat and lackluster into one with movement and depth. As the familiar zigzag rhythm emerged, I still wrestled with how to guide the viewer’s eye through the painting. It needed a moment of punctuation in the foreground grass. Birds, butterflies, and even a ladybug felt too predictable. Then the idea of a dragonfly struck. Its iridescent eyes intentionally the only hot pink in the entire piece became the quiet focal point that anchored the composition.
