Artist Inspiration: When one stands on the bank of a river, they mostly see the surface. But all the real life is happening just beneath it. I painted this rainbow trout viewed from above and just beneath the surface, as if I were standing quietly and the river briefly allowed me to see its secret life. It’s a close view of his head underwater—large, reflective bubbles trailing above him, the telltale signs of movement and life below the surface. In a split second, he rises for a drifting insect. The surface breaks—circles widening, then softening back into calm. I love that moment. Nothing dramatic happens, yet everything important does.
The river feeds him; he feeds the larger life around him, and the water closes again as if it were never disturbed.
