Artist Inspiration: What began as a simple scene changed when I added one small lamb running in the opposite direction—away from wherever the rest are headed. What does he know? That single choice turned the painting into a story. “Breakaway” captures the Trailing of the Sheep at sunrise, with Mount Baldy glowing in soft pastel blues, golds, and peach. The sheep are slightly illustrative and stylized, their warm tones echoed in the swirling sun above as wispy clouds wrap the mountain and the flock moves steadily down the road. Created for consideration as the 30th anniversary poster of the 2026 Trailing of the Sheep in Hailey, Idaho, the work became deeply personal. I thought of my son, Kipling, and the biblical image of leaving the ninety-nine to seek the one. This piece became my quiet prayer—that no matter how far he wanders, he’ll someday find his way home.
