Artist Inspiration: This artwork was my first serious attempt at painting. Inspired by the bold, colorful style of Leonid Afremov, I picked up a palette knife and dove in. Titled Fade into You, it was created for my son and daughter-in-law, Kipling Pedersen and Kristy Friesen. I worked to capture the reflection of light on wet pavement and labored over perspective, while personalizing the scene by painting our sweet family dog, Measle, bent ear and all, styling the figures to reflect Kipling and Kristy’s city vibe. During the process, my palette knife accidentally skidded through Kristy’s red dress and into Kipling’s purple shirt, a true Bob Ross “happy accident.” That unintended stroke solved my struggle with their faces, and I leaned into it, finishing the windblown motion by letting Kristy’s hair sweep across her face and abstractly burying the couple together. That moment of letting go gave the painting its name, Fade into You. With nearly 30 hours invested and plenty of challenges, especially capturing movement and proportion. It remains one of my favorite pieces and a reminder that sometimes the painting knows what it needs before you do.
