Artist Inspiration: This piece is deeply tied to a specific place and a pivotal moment in time. While I was painting this view of the Elkhorn prairie—the beautiful landscape right outside my step-mom Helen’s back door—she was undergoing serious heart surgery.
As I worked the canvas, I found myself captivated by the natural flow and movement of the scenery. The rich rusts, oranges, and greens of the fields began to mirror the literal and metaphorical rhythm of a heartbeat, while the dark treeline in the distance offered a sense of quiet strength and stability. In every textured stroke, I saw the resilience and vitality of Helen’s own heart. Heart of Helen’s is a tribute to her, a reflection of a landscape she loves, and a visual prayer for her healing and enduring life force.
