Artist Inspiration: When one stands on the bank of a river, they mostly see the surface. But all the real life is happening just beneath it.
I painted this rainbow trout viewed from above and just beneath the surface, as if I were standing quietly and the river briefly allowed me to see its secret life. It’s a close view of his head underwater—large, reflective bubbles trailing above him, the telltale signs of movement and life below the surface. In a split second, he rises for a drifting insect. The surface breaks—circles widening, then softening back into calm. I love that moment. Nothing dramatic happens, yet everything important does.
The river feeds him; he feeds the larger life around him, and the water closes again as if it were never disturbed.
A living river is made of thousands of these quiet exchanges. Clean water, healthy flow, and protected habitat make that simple rise possible. This piece was created for the Project Big Wood fundraiser. Their work ensures these hidden, essential moments—the ones most people never notice—are still here for the next generation to witness.
